What to Expect from an Intended Parent/Recipient Third-Party Reproduction Consultation
Making the decision to pursue third-party reproduction often brings a wide range of emotions- fear, excitement, optimism and oftentimes, ambivalence. As a Single Mother by Choice (SMC) that used donor sperm to conceive my children, not only do I have training in fertility, family-building and third-party reproduction, but I also have first-hand experience going through the journey myself.
Whether you are using donor egg, sperm, embryo or a gestational carrier (GC), this psychoeducational consultation is an opportunity to process any feelings of uncertainty, concerns, answer questions as well as gain clarity in moving forward using donor gametes.
Most fertility clinics follow the American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM) guidelines, which require intended parents using donor gametes to meet with a qualified mental health professional. This consultation will provide the tools and perspective that will help you make an informed decision with more clarity and assurance in the process. It is an opportunity for recipients to explore and process their feelings, or discuss concerns to confidently move forward.
Topics addressed during the consultation will include:
Fertility History
Needs of donor-conceived persons
Grief and loss of genetic contribution to the child
Limitations of donor screening
Desired qualities of the donor and its implications
Challenges of anonymity due to DNA testing (23andMe, etc)
Decisions regarding disclosure to the child, including what information (if any) to share with family and friends
Where to find resources, support groups, and ongoing counseling support
I understand that pursuing third-party reproduction may not be a decision you have entered into lightly, but it is an opportunity to educate and support you on your journey to parenthood. Once we have completed the consultation I will provide a letter to your fertility clinic and/or agency, confirming that you participated in the psychoeducational consultation on the social, moral and ethical implications of pursuing third-party reproduction.
